It costs approximately £17,000 a year to operate the library – see the breakdown of costs here. Cash fundraising through events, donations (individual and corporate), renting the library, raffles, membership scheme, small grants and more is essential for APCL to continue.
We recently received a grant for improvements to the library resulting in the refurbishment of some areas including 2 new toilets (one disabled friendly), a store room, new doors, ceiling/lighting in the children’s library and damp course. We will have new disabled friendly main entrance doors shortly. We installed WiFi which is free to library members, and a fab new kitchen (with appliances) which was donated and fitted by Howdens Kitchens. Thanks go to Howdens Kitchens and also to Veolia for painting the exterior of the building at no cost.
Becoming a volunteer with the library is a very rewarding experience – ask any of our volunteers.
There are many roles available – we presently have enough library assistants but need a regular cleaner! We have volunteers who deliver leaflets, makes cakes/craft items etc, organise fundraising activities and events, assist the Treasurer, run the Coffee Corner and more. Some volunteers have taken on small tasks like checking and cleaning the children’s toys, reading the meters, creating displays, towel/tea towel washing, shredder monitor!
So, there’s a wide range of volunteering opportunities available within the team.
